Professor Marilyn Waring will be special guest at a reception on Thursday, November 24 at BBC Blackstaff House.

An Evening with Marilyn Waring


An internationally renowned professor, author and parliamentarian will be giving her expert opinion on women and the economy in Belfast on Thursday, November 24.


Dr Marilyn Waring, known internationally for her groundbreaking work on the political economy, development assistance and human rights, will address a special conversation and reception at the BBC Blackstaff House, starting at 6.00pm.

Led by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and the Women’s Resource and Development Agency, the conversation will also feature former east Belfast MLA Dawn Purvis and Foundation Director, Dr. Avila Kilmurray.

A three-time Member of Parliament in New Zealand, Professor Waring works in the Institute of Public Policy at the Auckland University of Technology.

She has been a Member of the Board of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, an expert on the economics of unpaid work and her classic book is titled Counting for Nothing - what men value and what women are worth.

Her work was the subject of a 1995 film by Oscar-winning director Terre Nash titled Who’s Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics.

She became a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2008 New Year’s Honours Lists for her services to women and economics.

Dr Waring is also currently a member of the Boards of the Association of Women in Development (AWID) and the Canadian Index of Well Being.
