Communities in Transition Programme 2
Ten new areas are benefiting from the Communities in Transition Programme, joining ten communities previously engaged in the successful initiative.
With funding from the International Fund for Ireland, work has now begun in the new Communities in Transition areas, which are:
• Dromore village, Co Down
• Seapatrick estate, outside Banbridge
• Cregagh and Clonduff estates in Castlereagh
• Doury Road in Ballymena
• Antiville and Craigy Hill estates in Larne
• Lisnahull in Dungannon
• Queen Street and Avenue Road in Lurgan
• Annsborough, outside Castlewellan
• Lisanally and Alexander estates in Armagh
• Parkmore estate in Craigavon.
The Communities in Transition Programme builds relationships within and between people and communities, promoting participation in community development and peacebuilding and creating community cohesion by offering opportunities and support not previously available to the selected areas.
It recognises particular difficulties facing communities with weak community infrastructure and is an important step in redressing imbalances from lack of investment in social capital - especially in areas that directly experience the legacy of the conflict, alienation and/or marginalisation.
Many local groups and communities participating in the first phase of the Communities in Transition Programme can offer useful guidance, advice and support to newly participating areas, spreading best practice and cementing skills developed through the initiative.
