YouthBank - youth led grant-makingLocal YouthBanks offer small groups of young people modest funding to support ideas for action and change.

YouthBank is the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland’s initiative to build leadership in young people.

Starting from the premise that involving young people in projects they design is the key approach, YouthBank builds skills around the allocation of resources to meet community need.

Working on an all-island basis, YouthBank utilises a network of devolved grant-making committees run by young people.

Local YouthBanks offer small groups of young people modest funding to support ideas for action and change.

Funds distributed by these decision-making committees supports small-scale local community projects, tackling issues of direct importance to the young people.

  • Raising additional funding
  • Interviewing young people

YouthBank creates a climate that draws in other young people and challenges adults’ perceptions of young people’s capabilities and behaviour.

A full training programme assists participants in developing new skills, insights, knowledge and understanding to undertake work, backed up by on-going support provided by local co-ordinators and the full-time YouthBank staff team.

A YouthBank toolkit is provided, with tips and ideas for local co-ordinators, which is divided into 16 key steps to provide a helpful outline of tasks and processes to consider.

Youthbank's purpose is to develop leadership opportunities, build capacity among the young grant-makers and to create opportunities for grant-aided youth- led groups to engage in self help and community action.

Youth-led grant-making is all about making decisions about need, community priorities as viewed by young people and ways of having an impact – all matters that are profoundly influenced by young people's reactions and responses to what they deem as fair.
